13:00: Holt-Apache / Sheridan Corral Trail (#181). ~5 mi (?) @ 3 hrs; gain: ??? ft

The GPS was reset, so no stats for the trip. I should put it somewhere other than the cargo pocket or figure out if it has a lock feature. Besides not being able to see my trail, I also cannot geo-tag my photos. Crap.

Oh well, now the good stuff. Challenging trail with so many amazing views. I’m definitely tired now. Made it to where the 181 intersected with the North Fork Big Dry Trail (#225). Tried to follow the 181, but there were a number of fallen trees and overgrowth. I thought I had the trail but eventually it lost any characteristics of a path so I doubled back to the intersection. I had heard some turkeys calling from the direction of the 225, so I took that for a while. Didn’t see any turkeys and decided to call it a day.

Apparently there was a forest fire here 3-4 years ago. It made for an interesting sight. More than a couple of times the remaining trunk of a burnt-down tree looked like a bear.

I’ve been bringing a thermos of coffee with me and leaving it in the car. Strange how something so simple feels like such a great reward after a hike. I actually start craving it when I’m about a half-mile from the trailhead.
