8:15: towards Mogollon Trail (#153). A bust.
As I was driving towards the trailhead, I see 2 giant birds running down the road towards me. I think, “Ostriches. I’ve driven into an ostrich farm. Huh, even New Mexico has its weirdos.”
Aside: people that own ostriches are just eccentric weirdos. They try to rationalize it (“the meat is so good”, “other things”…I don’t know, I checkout pretty early when talking to ostrich people) but it’s just fucking weird.
As I get closer, I see that they aren’t ostriches–they’re turkeys! The biggest fucking turkeys I’ve ever seen! I was a bit too shocked to grab my camera in time.
About a half mile later, I crest a small hill and see what I had feared: a swift flowing creek crossing the road.
Google satellite had shown some sort of crevasse, but it looked dry and every creek around here was bone-dry, so I thought I might be able to get through. This creek was running a bit too fast, looked a bit too deep and I hadn’t had this car long enough to know its capabilities so I decided it wasn’t worth testing. Bummer.
Still, those turkeys…
